One thing I've noticed while writing a dissertation on alternative religion is that religion & spirituality are on everyone's minds. Let's hope this bodes well. Here's a sampling.
- The latest edition of Boldtype, the spirituality issue, features RZA as guest editor. Reviews include Eco's latest (with a link to a cool annotation project using Wiki technology), Osamu Tezuka's Buddha, Joanne Harris's Holy Fools, and The Unfettered Mind: Writings of the Zen Master to the Sword Master.
- Guruphiliac is a blog that goes undercover to scrutinize some of the world's most popular gurus.
- Often when I tell someone the story of Aimee Semple McPherson, the subject of the latest chapter I'm writing, they suggest a screenplay. For now, they'll have to settle for Richard Rossi's film currently looking for a distributor. It sounds a little preachy, but Ron Howard's father plays Aimee's father James Kennedy and Charlie Chaplin's granddaughter also has a role.
- Boston University surveys Americans in a study of satanism and crime.
- Alt-country musician Jim White is Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus in this new documentary. The soundtrack features White, Sixteen Horsepower, and Cat Power, among others.
- Clem Bastow of Stylus documents the traces of Beck's Scientology in cover art and liner notes.

When did religion bode well? When the pious set out to improve our ailling world? Or when they sank into themselves on the path to self improvement while letting the rest of humanity rot? Calvinism or budhism, it's always the same old song: my soul, my salvation, redemption here, my good man, only here. Well, no thanks.
Selfishly, far sunk into the path of self-improvement, I was hoping it bodes well for my dissertation.
Well, since your blog is such a great source of facinating links, and keeps me awake even without those links for quite a few hours once or twice a week, I don't think I can blame you of being a self-absorbed self-improver, and I hope that the new-old religious tide does bode well for your dissertation.
