lest I be considered self-important
I made the difficult decision to call in sick to work today (made slightly less difficult by the fever, chills, sore throat, and general delirium), so I was happy to see this post at blogging.la that demonstrates I was being responsible rather than self-important.
Before I go back to bed, I figured I'd catch up on some lingering links:
- Ray Bradbury suggests the monorail as a solution to L.A.'s transportation problems.
- Mayor Sam has a post up about Aimee Semple McPherson, which can serve as a good primer for the Urban Fervor excerpt to be posted a couple weeks from now.
- I never fail to be amused by the delirium over at That's Just the Booze Talking. If you've never been, this post captures the addictive madness.
- I may have taken way too long to complete my dissertation, but at least I know who Simone de Beauvoir is.
- Neatorama has an update on the Buddha Boy, the latest guru to make claim to divinity. He apparently burst into flames last month and remained unscorched.
- The latest issue of New York Magazine is dedicated to an exploration of blogging.
- Two sets of children's drawings of scientists: before and after they came upon one in the wild.
- Smithsonian Magazine reports on a South Pacific village that worships a mysterious American named John Frum.
- A.M. Homes's forthcoming novel, This Book Will Save Your Life, takes place in "semiapocalyptic" Los Angeles.
- The founder of Soft Skull Press, Sanders Hicks, is running for governor in New York.
- The Boston College website has a slideshow on their new collection of Gulliver's Travels ephemera.
